CAPE TOWN – Human Settlements Minister Lindiwe Sisulu has promised Imizamo Yethu residents during her visit to the area on Tuesday that government will intervene to prevent a repeat of the devastating fire over the weekend.
Four people were killed in the blaze and 15,000 people were displaced.
Minister Sisulu says the City of Cape Town’s reblocking mechanism will alleviate density concerns when the rebuilding of informal structures resumes.
She adds permanent housing alternatives are also being explored.
“The City, working with the engineering department, has worked out a way in which we can avert a fire of this nature in the future.”
Sisulu was joined by Western Cape Housing MEC Bonginkosi Madikizela, who asked for residents’ cooperation.
“Undertakings have been made here as to what will happen from now going forward.”
Officials will on Wednesday engage with more residents to explain government’s plans for the area.
