Police repelled a riotous mob that attempted to force their way into the National Heroes stadium during the semi-final match between Zambi and South Africa in the Total CAF Tournament.
Police were forced to disperse the mob with teargas that affected play inside the stadium as effects of the teargas affected players from both teams.
Police Spokesperson Issued the following brief statement.
“There was a mob outside which mobilised and wanted to break through and force their way into the stadium. After police repelled them , they started throwing all sorts of missiles at police officers and this prompted officers to discharge teargas to disperse them. All this was happening outside but due to wind, the gas also affected those that were inside.”
President Edgar Lungu, the First Lady Mama Esther Lungu, CAF Officials and other VIPs were in the stadium to watch the crucial game.
Zambia beat South Africa 1-0. Both Zambia and South Africa have qualified for the Under20 World Cup that will take place in South Korea.
